In a world where sustainable energy solutions are at the forefront of conversations, Bowman eTurbo Systems is developing products that enable industries to become more sustainable.

Founded in 2004, Bowman is the world leader in advanced electrified turbomachinery - eTurbines, eCompressors and eTurbochargers for internal combustion engines (ICEs), fuel cells and adjacent applications across multiple sectors. Now employing more than 50 people, we are active today in a variety of industries such as Power Generation, Rail, On and Off-highway and many more. Headquartered in Southampton, United Kingdom, we operate on a global scale with many of our systems installed throughout the world.

Since inception, Bowman has gone on to design, engineer and develop technology that has paved the way to creating more sustainable industries; working with many prestigious global companies to develop tailored systems from the design stage to manufacturing and distribution.

Our purpose is to enable the ongoing use of incumbent ICE engine technology sustainably. We are enabling transition to future carbon-neutral and zero-carbon fuels while empowering the development and optimisation of novel power system technologies, such as fuel cells. To do this, we are developing a series of products:

eTurbine Range

At the core of today’s successful exhaust gas energy recovery range, now in its third generation. The eTurbine is situated downstream of the turbocharger or within a turbocharger wastegate flow coupled to a high-speed alternator. It provides the highest achievable electrical efficiency through turning heat energy into useful electrical power.

eCompressor Range

Our eCompressor is driven by a high-speed electric motor connected directly to its shaft. The eCompressor rapidly provides air which can be used to supplement the charge provided by a conventional turbocharger. This helps to remove the issue of turbocharger lag and long zero to full load times that ICE’s face. To eradicate this issue, Bowman developed StartIQ™, a fast-start electric compressor which is a two-stage eCompressor that utilises our state-of-the-art power electronics (PE) unit to deliver rapid ramping capability and huge operational benefits for gas gensets.

eTurbocharger Range

The ultimate incarnation of Bowman’s technology and expertise in turbomachinery electrification, power electronics, and intelligent digital control. A high-speed (up to 125,000 rpm – 5 times faster than an F1 engine) electric motor/generator coupled directly to the turbocharger’s shaft provides the benefits of both the eTurbine and eCompressor in a single machine.

Bowman’s systems enable the development and improvement of other power systems concepts that are being explored, such as hydrogen fuel cells. By re-purposing or upfitting our customers’ assets, we can reduce fuel consumption, total cost of ownership and emissions, and provide more time to switch to biofuels and/or efuels.
