We’re growing and having to say farewell to Ocean Quay

We are relocating to support our growth and provide the perfect home for our Turbo Systems Electrification Centre. Read about our move to new premises in Southampton.

We are delighted to announce that Bowman eTurbo Systems is moving to new, larger premises in our South Coast home city after a presence at Ocean Quay in Southampton, UK for over thirty years.

Of course this is enormously positive news, driven by our need to have more space for our expanding operations, engineering team, and the setting up of our super exciting Turbo Systems Electrification Centre (TSEC).

But with the Bowman name present in Ocean Quay for over a generation, it also comes with a sense of sadness, so I want to take this opportunity to reflect briefly on our history.

Our History

It was in the early nineties when the Davies family brought Rival Bowman Yachts, and Sadler yachts together on to the Ocean Quay site. These businesses ultimately suffered the fate that befell a great deal of the UK leisure boat industry, but at the same time, Tony Davies had started operating a new business developing and building advanced micro gas turbine generators for stationary power generation.

This company operated into the early 2000s and was the precursor to Bowman Power Group Ltd – the company which we now refer to as Bowman eTurbo Systems.

Ocean Quay is a fascinating historical waterfront site in the UK’s primary maritime city. It features the only working dry-dock in the city and has benefited from the establishment of a new shipbuilding business, The Woodshack Limited, moving onto the site and investing substantially in rejuvenating the site and buildings.

But as much as we’ve enjoyed our time at Ocean Quay, the substantial and continued growth in our team and operations means it’s time – for the first time in our history – for us to move to new larger premises.

Our Future

The new site is on a brand new light industrial/commercial development on the Western outskirts of the city called Adanac Park, alongside the prestigious UK Ordnance Survey headquarters. We will be going into a 15.5k sqft unit with office accommodation for up to sixty engineers and other staff, and a substantial flexible factory floor space.

Our first fit-out activity will be to move in and commission new capital equipment which has started to be delivered for the TSEC. It is this new capability that completes Bowman’s offering as a one-stop-shop for all the knowledge, capability and manufacturing processes required to take conventional mechanical turbocharger and turbomachinery solutions and electrify them. It complements the extensive knowledge and experience of the business in respect to research, development, assembly and test of electrified turbomachinery.

The move represents a significant step forward for the company and I hope you will follow our story as the mobilisation progresses and new capabilities come online there. The build is in the final stages now, with power due to go live before the end of March and handover sometime mid to late April. We will be providing regular updates and welcome any questions and enquiries regarding any of our activities.
