Keith Douglas, our Performance Engineering Director, reflects on how rapidly rising diesel prices mean that the efficiency gains offered by our eTurbo Systems are now more important than ever. Read more here!

With diesel prices reaching record highs, together with the need to immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the need for efficiency-enhancing, CO2-reducing products for large high-speed and medium-speed internal combustion engines has never been more significant.

Improved efficiency with quick payback

Wholesale diesel prices have effectively doubled from 2016–2020 levels, which crudely means the payback time on investment costs for efficiency-enhancing products has halved. Through heat recovery of exhaust gas energy normally wasted to atmosphere, Bowman’s eTurbine technology is proven to reduce the fuel consumption of diesel ICEs (Internal Combustion Engines) by as much as 7%.

Reducing CO2 emissions

Commercial analysis for recent project proposals indicate payback times of less than 1 year can be achieved, and with no signs of the diesel price reducing in the near term, significant beneficial operational savings in the following years can be realised. The associated CO2 reductions (7% CO2 reduction on a continuous power 1MWe diesel, would save >100tonne CO2 emissions per year) from applying eTurbine technology means there is also a significant environmental reward on top of the financial one.

Proven technology available today

Bowman’s eTurbine technology has been proven over the last decade in some of the harshest environments across the world and is available to apply to diesel (and natural gas) high-speed engines in the 300 – 2000kWe range, and medium-speed engines in the 5 to 10MWe range. At the same time as we at Bowman continue to refine our TorqIQ technology to enable the transition to alternative fuels of the future, there is no better time than today to fit Bowman’s eTurbine technology to improve the efficiency and environmental performance of existing generator fleets.
